Nevada Transportation Network Self-Insured Workers' Compensation Group (NTNSIG)
Why Group Self-Insurance?
The idea of self-insurance isn't new. Large corporations have done it for years. Beginning in 1995, the State of Nevada allowed groups of businesses to pool their resources so that individual members could enjoy the same kind of workers' compensation insurance benefits normally reserve for big business.
Self-insured workers' compensation is one of the easiest ways for association members to save money and improve their bottom line. Many trade associations in states where group self-insurance is allowed are providing real savings for members. Here in Nevada, members of the Nevada Transportation Network Self-Insured Group (NTNSIG) have saved 48% on their annual workers' compensation premiums during the first two years of the program, representing over 410 million in savings by the group as a whole.
The Nevada Motor Transport Association is proud of the success of its self-insured workers' compensation program. The NTNSIG has grown steadily since its first members signed on in October 1995. The program enables eligible association members to solve the problems of cost and availability of workers' compensation benefits.
Benefits of Group Self-Insurance
Group self-insurance cuts the cost of workers' compensation insurance in many ways. Because management is handled by the group, instead of the state, or an insurance company, the association can control administrative and overhead costs while providing better service to its member companies.
The NTNSIG is operated as a non-profit whose sole purpose is to provide a lower cost workers' compensation product to our members through safety and risk management programs. A number of factors contribute to NTNSIG's outstanding success:
How Does The Plan Work?
Self-insured groups are operated as not for profit unincorporated associations of member companies. Savings are realized by controlling claims, selective underwriting and performing loss control services. All assessment income to the group that is not paid out for claims and administrative costs is available to be returned to the group. Members own the group.
Several measures are utilized to make sure the NTNSIG loss fund is adequately protected to meet demand. Excess coverage is purchased to protect the fund against single catastrophic losses and against numerous smaller claims. Two types of excess coverage protect the fund:

Nevada Motor Transport Association
The NTNSIG is sponsored by the Nevada Motor Transport Association (NMTA), a non-profit association devoted to promoting the interests of the motor carrier industry since 1932.
NMTA is governed in a democratic fashion through elected officers and directors representing the membership. All areas of the state and all types of operations are represented on its board of directors.
In addition to sponsoring the NTNSIG self-insured workers' compensation group, NMTA provides an array of valuable services to its members. Among these are legislative advocacy, monthly newsletters, and special mailings regarding laws, rules and regulations, a comprehensive group health plan, a supply department for documents required by the USDOT, and workshops and seminars.
The NMTA is headquartered in Reno-Sparks and has a satellite office in Las Vegas.
